Muharram 1448 AH — The Islamic New Year Begins
As the month of Muharram begins, we welcome the Islamic New Year 1448 AH. Muharram is one of the four sacred months in Islam, a time for reflection, remembrance, and spiritual renewal.
Significance of Muharram
Muharram marks the beginning of the Islamic lunar calendar. It is a month of great virtue and significance in Islamic tradition. Allah says in the Qur’an:
“Indeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve months in the register of Allah from the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred.” (Qur’an 9:36)
The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: “The best fast after Ramadan is the month of Allah that you call Muharram.” (Sahih Muslim)
Ashura — 10th Muharram
The 10th day of Muharram, known as Ashura, holds special significance. It is the day Allah saved Prophet Musa (AS) and the Children of Israel from Pharaoh. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) recommended fasting on this day, saying it expiates the sins of the previous year.
It is also a day of solemn remembrance for the martyrdom of Imam Husain (RA) and his companions at Karbala — standing firm for truth and justice against all odds.
